We celebrate Kwanzaa (and this celebration only started in 1966) without attacks on it’s traditions or the names of symbols associated with it. We celebrate Hanukkah, lighting candles on the Menorah each night. Singing special songs, such as Ma’oz Tzur. Reciting Hallel prayer. Eating festive meals and foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot all without having to change the names of anything associated with it. Buddhist celebrate Bodhis Day (Dec 8th), followers of Kemetic Orthodoxy celebrate the Day of the Return of the Wandering Goddess, Muslims Id al-Adha and the Hajj, Nova Romans (a.k.a. Romana) celebrate Saturnalia, a seven day feast starting on Dec 17th, and Wiccans celebrate Yule at the time of the Winter Solstice. All of these religious and secular groups celebrate freely and openly but it’s the Christians that are under attack every year. Their celebration of Christmas, the display of nativity scenes, even the name of the Christmas tree are being renamed or completely disallowed each year under the guise of free speech and equality.

Recently, atheists and agnostics with the Freedom From Religion Foundation put up a sign in the Washington State Capitol that says, in part: “Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.” Now this sign had nothing to do with equal religious or secular representation. The atheists don’t celebrate Christmas so a sign during Christmas should not be displayed.

Washington State is becoming a laughing stock over this and it’s time for our state to take a stance against the attack on a Christians Christmas. I’m all for equality….if other religions want to display their signs and symbols because the celebrate an event in the month of December, perfect…let them. But the atheists don’t celebrate anything during December, why should their sign be allowed.

The foundation’s co-president, Dan Barker, said it was important for atheists to offer their viewpoint alongside the Nativity scene and Christmas-style holiday tree. Notice that he didn’t say that it was important to place it next to the Menorah…it was important to place it next to the Nativity scene and the Christmas tree…a direct attack on the christian religious holiday. As much as the sate is willing to protect his rights, where are they when it comes to protecting the rights of Christians that want to celebrate Christmas..free of persecution and torment. Where is Gov Gregoire when it comes to protecting our rights. Call them at let you know how feel…..phone – 360-902-4111, online form – http://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/default.asp. Please be respectful in any phone call, email or online submission.
