The Media Double Standard

This week Megyn Kelly lost her job with NBC after making remarks about blackface and Halloween. In her remarks, Kelly told her guest panelists that dressing up in blackface was okay when she was a child, and questioned whether it was alright for white people to do if they were playing a character. She didn’t say that she did or that she would do it, just questioned whether it was right.  Light the fuse!

Al Roker expressed outrage. On the “Today Show” this morning, Roker said, “While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country because this is a history going back to the 1830s. Minstrel shows to demean and denigrate a race wasn’t right.” He continued, “I’m old enough to have lived through ‘Amos and Andy,’ where you had white people in black face playing black characters, magnifying the worst stereotypes about black people and that’s what the big problem is.”

Here’s a video of Jimmy Kimmel who hosts ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. In it he can be seen impersonating black former Utah Jazz basketball star Karl Malone.

During the impression, Kimmel speaks with a defined speech impediment and acts in a manner that suggests he believes Malone is less than intelligent. I guess we will see the outrage from Al Roker soon!
